WHAT IS THE RIGHT TYPE OF FILTRATION FOR MY NEEDS?
When choosing a water filtration method for hiking, there are several options to consider, each with its pros and cons. Here is a buyer's guide to help you decide which is best for your needs:
UV Light Purifiers
UV light purifiers are compact and effective against all pathogens, including viruses. They are ideal for international travel and single or small-group use. However, they require batteries, do not filter solid particles, and are not suitable for very dirty water.
Gravity Filters
Gravity filters are great for larger groups as they filter large volumes of water efficiently and remove most pathogens, but not viruses. They are easy to use, and work well with natural water sources, but can require regular maintenance.
Pump Filters
Pump filters, such as the MSR Guardian, provide thorough filtration, including virus removal. They are best for high-risk water sources and group use but are heavier, require effort to operate, and range from affordable to expensive.
Chemical Treatments
Chemical treatments (tablets or liquid) are lightweight and effective against all pathogens, including viruses. They are inexpensive per use but have a delayed effect (30 minutes to 2 hours), do not filter particulates, and can alter the water's taste. They are best as a backup or for ultralight hiking.
Personal Filters
Personal filters, like the Katadyn BeFree are budget-friendly and highly portable. They filter out most pathogens (except viruses) and are easy to use but are suitable for personal use only. They rely on frequent access to water sources and may require effort to maintain proper hygiene and avoid cross-contamination.
Boiling Water
Boiling is a reliable method for making water safe but is time-consuming and impractical for large amounts. It is useful in emergencies or at campsites but is not suitable for quick hydration needs during a hike.
Choosing the Right Filter
• For solo hikers or ultralight backpackers, consider a personal filter like the Katadyn BeFree, supplemented with chemical treatments as a backup.
• For group hikes, a gravity filter is ideal for its capacity and ease of use.
• For international travel or areas with virus risks, invest in a pump filter or a UV purifier.
Ultimately, your choice should be based on the water quality in your area, the size of your group, ease of use, weight, cost, and the potential risks of drinking untreated water.
