Fly Fishing Gear | Fly Line Backing

Connecting your fly line to the reel is the backing, and when you hook into your fish of a life, and it spools you to the backing, you'll be glad you took the time to choose a good quality backing. With offerings from Rio and Scientific Anglers, there's a backing to suit every angler.

WHY DO I NEED FLY LINE BACKING?

Backing is a supplementary line attached to the end of your fly line on a reel. Made from either braided nylon or gel-spun polyethylene, it serves as a strong, yet thin line that extends the total length of your fishing line. Backing is essential for handling fish that may take long runs, exceeding your fly line alone.

The primary purpose of backing is to add length and strength to your fishing setup. When targeting larger fish, especially species known for long, fast runs, the fly line itself might not be long enough to handle the battle. Backing provides that extra line, ensuring you don’t run out of line during a fight. Additionally, backing helps fill the reel spool, creating a better fit for the fly line and helping to prevent any issues with line management, such as tangling or coiling.

HOW MUCH BACKING DO I NEED?

The amount of backing required depends largely on the type of fish you’re targeting and the environment in which you’re fishing. For freshwater species like trout, typically 50 to 100 yards of backing is sufficient. This amount provides enough extra line for most situations while still fitting comfortably on a smaller reel. However, for saltwater species or larger freshwater fish, you may need significantly more backing, sometimes 200 yards or more, with a higher pound test strength. The goal is to ensure you have enough line to handle any potential long runs the fish may take. The specific amount also depends on the capacity of your reel and the weight of your fly line so it’s always best to check the specs of your reel from the manufacture.

DACRON VS GEL-SPUN

Dacron backing is ideal for trout and other freshwater species. It’s thicker and softer, making it easier to handle, which is perfect for smaller fish where extreme line capacity isn’t crucial. Dacron is also more affordable, making it a go-to choice for most freshwater anglers. On the other hand, gel-spun backing is primarily used in saltwater fishing or when targeting large, fast-running species. Its thin diameter allows for significantly more line on the reel, which is essential when fighting fish that can take long, powerful runs. Though more expensive, the added capacity and strength make gel-spun backing invaluable for saltwater and big game fishing.
