WHAT SALTWATER SPECIES DO WE HAVE IN AUSTRALIA TO TARGET ON FLY?

In Australia, saltwater fly fishing presents a range of exciting opportunities to target diverse species. For those seeking powerful and challenging fish, the Giant Trevally stands out with its impressive size and strength, while the Kingfish offers a similar level of power and is often found in coastal waters. Queenfish and Australian Salmon are also popular targets; Queenfish are known for their speed and agility, making for thrilling fights, while Australian Salmon provide excellent action and are commonly sought after by fly fishers.

In addition to these, the Barramundi is another highly prized species, known for its powerful strikes and challenging behavior. Tailor, which can be found along the coast, are dynamic and offer great sport, while Bream are often found in estuarine environments and can be a fun challenge on the fly. Flathead, with their distinctive appearance and predatory nature, also add an interesting dimension to saltwater fly fishing, especially in estuaries and coastal flats.

WHAT IS AN IDEAL SALTWATER FLY SETUP?

Rod: A 9 to 10-foot rod in the 7 to 12 weight range is typically ideal. The specific weight depends on the target species and fishing conditions. Heavier rods are better for larger, more powerful fish like Giant Trevally or Kingfish, while lighter rods can be suitable for species like Bream or Salmon.

Line: A weight-forward floating line or intermediate line is usually a good choice. For deeper waters or faster currents, a sinking line might be necessary. Ensure the line matches the rod weight for optimal performance.

Leader: A strong leader is essential for handling the powerful runs of saltwater species. Generally, a 12 to 20-pound test leader is suitable, but adjust based on the size of the fish and the conditions you’re fishing in.

Tippet: The tippet should be strong enough to withstand the challenges posed by saltwater species. Typically, a tippet in the 12 to 20-pound test range works well, with adjustments made depending on the specific target and fishing environment.
